In the late 20th century, there was a shift in thinking for humanity. A more selfish, disposable attitude replaced the more unified, conscious ways of the past. More waste was created in the subsequent 30 years than in the previous 150. We seemed to be getting less and less intelligent, and more and more wrapped up in our own personal worlds. A disinterest in the well being of others and the politics that governed them made it far easier for politicians and corporations to hide what they were doing behind the scenes. The introduction of social media in the 2000s was the final nail in the proverbial coffin. By the time activists and thinkers caught on, it was too late. By 2040, the environment was decimated beyond our ability to repair. Corporations, only interested in self-preservation, had bought control of nearly all politicians. This decline, dubbed The Fall, continued until 2062 when the major conglomerates around the globe hatched a plan to ensure their survival indefinitely.
By 2073, large corporations controlled almost every aspect of the political realm. While elections were still held and politicians were still “chosen” to serve in their selected roles, they were not serving the people any longer. 22 conglomerates began working together worldwide to start an artificial trade war, later dubbed by historians as World War III, designed to be so devastating that it crashed the stock markets worldwide simultaneously. They had been using their hold on governing bodies to set up rules and regulations of their choosing, allowing them to absorb almost all assets in the free world. In just 3 short years, the 22 consolidated down to just 2, Amaxxon NS in control of the Americas, Africa, and parts of the north and south pole, with Asia, Europe, Australia, and the rest of the north and south poles falling to the Kamiyama Group.
The next 173 years, known by the oppressed as the Great Dolor, a sorrowful time filled with forced labor, disappearances, and human experimentation, were referred to as the Second Renaissance by those oppressing. With limitless resources and an infinite and disposable workforce, innovation knew no limit. The discovery of a new gravitationally reactive element, Severitudium (Hes), amongst the most impactful, lead to the invention of a self perpetual, gravity based, energy system. Ignited with a small, 1 gram cube of Hes based starter fuel, the Severol core would start a never ending churn of gravitational energy, not so different from the surface of a burning star.
By the year 2202, the power of Severitudium had given us an infinite energy drive system solving the fuel issues. A near light speed propulsion system was developed using it to solve the speed issues. The gravitational field generated by the energy drive harnessed to give us downward force in space, while also shielding us from the effects of time dilation and radiation. With the power of a Dyson sphere literally a size one could hold in their hands, were it not for its immense weight, the Corporations had thrust us into the stars. It was with this new found spatial freedom the powers that be decided we had entered a new era. The generations going forward would be those of the explorations of space, thus, the year was reset to 0 E.S., on December 31st at 12:59pm 2202 A.D., across all colonies.
The Corporations ruled in relative peace over their employees/slaves for some time, but a dissonance was fermenting. Their empire was growing too large to keep their eyes everywhere all the time. Then, something happened that changed the course of humanity's future, an opportunity. During the routine third and final surface scan of the Neptunian moon Triton in preparation for a mining operation, something was discovered that had not appeared on the previous two. It turned out to be a strange, alien, artifact. An obelisk made of a stone, dark in color, almost humming, had exposed itself in a crater, made not by impact, but by what was discovered to be a great discharge of energy. It was something that had been buried in the ice for what was estimated to be over five hundred million years. This discovery tore the corporate alliance apart, driving the known colonies, numbering near 100 at the time, into all out warfare over ownership. Employees became soldiers. It was in this chaos a true rebellion could be formed.
For 37 years, the Copro Wars raged. Corpo slave, against corpo slave, against the Peoples for New Order resistance. It wasn't until they took Port Carmine, the great and first ship manufacturing port established on Mars, that the P.N.O. stood any real chance of defeating their overlords. It didn't end until they retook Earth, and either drug out and executed, or drove out the last of the Corporate rulers in great escape generation ships that were allowed to flee to the Main belt separating the Inner and Outer Sol System after giving up the heads of their organizations. When all was said and done, the P.N.O. reformed as the new government for all of humanity known as the Fair Order.
As the conflict grew to a close, the obelisk that began the entire endeavor was nearly forgotten, not even excavated for 22 years after the war ended, and due to its inactivity, was shelved only a few years later. The age that followed was referred to by the newly freed peoples of the Sol System, as the True Renaissance. All of the scientific discoveries made that went unshared were perfected and disseminated amongst the worlds. Flesh interfacing was achieved allowing full organic replacement and augmentation with mechanical parts. Artificial gravity was implemented with the advent of a better control mechanism for the Severol core, as well as improvements made to the propulsion systems made travel faster and safer. The Pinger, gravitationally assisted communications relay network was established, allowing for instantaneous communications between systems. Terraformation technology allowed humanity to change entire worlds to suit their needs. The perfecting of the Lazarus Project extended the human life span from around 100 years, to nearly 1000, making the still long travel times between systems and even galaxies far less relevant.
It took them nearly 150 years, but the F.O. had done their best to wrestle control of the Sol System from the clutches of the Corporate Overlords, distribute the amassed wealth of resources and knowledge, and make a safe and fair environment for all humanity. There was still oppression to overcome, missions to accomplish, and jobs to be done, but things were better than they had ever been. During this period, more equal advancement and resource distribution took place than in any other time in human history. Our population had more than recovered from our peak of 14 billion, reduced to 9 billion after the Corpo Wars, to an astonishing 27 billion spread throughout the system. This time of great prosperity was only marred slightly by the rise of the Privateers.
The ex-corpo entities that fled to the Mail belt, running low on resources, turned to piracy. The scourge of the middle system for nearly 40 years, refused to relent. It was not until they managed to steal plans for planetary terraformation that they began to fade into the background once again, seeming to vanish from the systems entirely this time.
For 207 years, the F.O. managed to keep the relative peace and prosperity throughout the now countless stations and bases scattered across the Sol System. But in their quest for peace, power began to consolidate at the top. The F.O. that once stood for personal responsibility and freedom from control, began to backslide into old ways. Elite crack down squads were introduced to deal with governmental decenters who dare speak against them. People disappearing in the night. Businesses shuttered that didn't relay the correct messages. It was beginning again, but at least this time, someone recognized the signs.
A series of legal battles began to unfold in 293 E.S.. The people of the Outer System argued the distance between them and the Inner system caused a distinct difference in what they felt was important on a fundamental level. There was no "one good way" to govern all and they wanted to try things their own way. The Inner System refuted, stating how unnatural of an idea it was to separate humanity. Dramatically calling it the end of galactic run. The people of the Outer System were only looking to have their voices heard from so far off, but did not wish to thrust their people into another system wide war. They made it clear though, they absolutely would if it came to it.
In 302 E.S. (2540), the United Spatial Front was formally recognized. After a near decade, the Outer System had successfully made their point without blood shed. In reality, after breaking down the total expenditure analysis including lives lost in an all out war, the F.O. decided a separation was not so bad. They would no longer be responsible for the billions of lives in the Outer System, but would still tax them like they were, heavier even, for all goods and services.
For 75 years the contentious peace held, but tensions were nearing the boiling point. Just as it was certain a war was going to be unavoidable, a great event took place, distracting the anxious leaders. A group of alien refugees, the MezeRen people, appeared at the edges of our very own Milky Way Galaxy, fleeing a great threat to their species' existence. Their home world, LarAng, in the TakRa System of the Triangulum galaxy, was invaded by a great ten legged menace and nearly wiped them out. They called them the Corexiads.
In exchange for our assistance and shelter, they shared much of their technology with us, the first and arguably the most useful being an implanted, AI assisted, Communication and translation device allowing us to seamlessly talk to any species after it heard a sampling of any new language. While they were welcomed with open arms by those that governed Outer Sol, the Inner System was not so kind. The closer the Outer System grew to the MezeRen, the more xenophobic the Inner System grew.
It was around this time another surprise took the system. The return of the Ex-Corpos, but in a way no one expected. Introducing themselves as the Shenu people, from a place they called the Shenubaki Belt, formerly the Main Belt. Unaided by the Lazarus serum, they had lived and died and lived again, the hardest life a human ever lived. The immense danger of space reforged them into the kind, patient, industrious people that stood before the F.O. and U.S.F. representatives. They did not wish to be left behind in this new era of alien contact.
Just after the reintroduction of the Shenu people, it was discovered that humanity had gone through an evolutionary change. The Lazarus serum, combined with the length of time we were spending in deep space had at some point changed us, just slightly, on a biological level. Humans that still existed in the Inner Sol system, were more protected by the sun's gravitational forces from some of the more dangerous radiations and energies that existed in and beyond the Jovian System. Those living in Outer Sol, on the other hand, had been developing biological resistances for generations now. The citizenry of the Outer System would still share the genus Homo, but would no longer be of the species Sapien. In their texts, going forward they would refer to themselves as the species Volatus. The mere presence of the MezeRen driving an already existing wedge further between the F.O. and the U.S.F., this new development only sunk it deeper.
The following 139 years were filled with a delicate peace, teetering on promises of more shared technology in exchange for a new home world for the MezeRen people to recover on. There was always a looming fear the Corexiads would return having tracked them from TakRa System, or the Shenu would turn on the Inner and Outer System as their new ways were some kind of Trojan horse. If not them, then the MezeRen would grow stronger and betray humanity, taking Sol for themselves. For most in Outer Sol, these were far off thoughts, but those of the Inner system were fed fearful propaganda, further driving their xenophobia. So much so, the F.O. began to have second thoughts on their arrangements.
In 525 E.S. (2727), The F.O. called for a surprise, special session to discuss the expulsion of all Outer System citizens and MezeRen as a species from the Inner System. In an almost unbelievable coincidence, during the opening statements of the hearings, the system's worst fears were realized. When the MezeRen arrived, a special network of energy detection devices were implemented throughout the Milky Way to avoid any unannounced guests from showing up again. The day the sensors triggered was the day the Corexiads had arrived. Fleeing the sessions, it would be nearly a decade before the Outer System would hear anything from the Inner.
When the invasion first began, a fantastical thing happened. The forgotten stone Obelisks activated. Even more, it activated in two places. The old one, in a research facility on the Jovian moon of Callisto, and the new, on what appeared to the invading flagship, disabling it completely. Unfortunately, this only put a small dent in the vast number of fleets the hostels arrived with. As war raged through the system again, humanity neared defeat. The tides of war didn't change in our favor until the arrival of a second alien species, this one somehow a bigger surprise than the first.
The Olympians arrived just in time to save us, and the MezeRen, from assured destruction. They made themselves known in grand fashion, swooping in to rescue one of humanity's most instrumental fleets in defending the Sol System just before their defeat. Their forces, called the Boreades, were made up of four new species. The Olympians themselves. The Hellene were from a moon called Atlas orbiting the planet Lapetus also in the Helios system. The Baato and the Drexen were also amongst them, both species from outside the Milky Way saved by the Olympians after they successfully and without aid defeated their own Corexiad invasion. After creating the means to travel between galaxies, they vowed to eliminate them from the universe.
The Olympians were the most surprising of all, being nearly exactly physically and biologically identical to Humans. It would later be discovered that our two species actually came from the same primordial material from a comet that struck both home worlds of Gaia and Earth. What's more, their people even visited Earth in our distant past, the literal inspiration for the ancient Greek Gods and religion.
As the conflict drew to a close, it was time to look forward again. The Sol system now included the Volatus and MezeRen governing over Outer Sol, as well as the Olympians and the Hellene acting in advisory roles. Less commingled, but the Baato and Drexen species were there as well. It was decided that instead of the USF, this new cooperative forged in the fires of battle, would be the Outer Sol Collective, or the O.S.C., replacing their old U.S.F. title.
Even though the Inner System stepped in during the final fazes of the war to prevent the destruction of our joint species, their early betrayals could not be forgiven. The Fair Order, once the liberators of humanity, was relegated to a secondary role in their own system, unable to evolve with the changing galaxy around them. They were forbidden to own property in the Outer System, only allowed in O.S.C. space with special issue permits, and were limited in their negotiation powers in the new trade policies formed between the other species. Their xenophobia was acting to isolate them further.
In the next handful of years, the O.S.C. would journey to the Triangulum Galaxy with the MezeRen, joined by fleets of Boreades warriors, to TakRa, the MezeRen home system to eliminate the Corexiads and free their enslaved people. They would create the Oasis Network, a system of safe haven planets under O.S.C. military jurisdiction where travelers can rest and resupply, linking the Sol System to TakRa, and a second arm to Helios where the Olympians and Hellene reside. They would create trade partnerships, cooperated stations and settlements, and share technology and philosophy, further growing their minds.
Even though it was precisely what they asked for, the F.O. grew jealous of the unbalanced nature of their agreements. Launching the Stranger program, they began to spy on the Outer System, steal their secrets, and disrupt their advancements. For years, they operated in complete concealment, right under the unsuspecting noses of the O.S.C.
The first time an agent was discovered, the O.S.C. was caught off guard. It was a scenario they simply had not planned for. It sparked the immediate creation of the Spy Hunter units, granted full impunity to track and eliminate any agents operating in O.S.C. space. The spies they managed to take alive covered their tracks so well, for years they were unsure if they were from the Inner System, or perhaps the Shenubaki, or even the Olympians.
With their stolen tech and secrets, the F.O. began to expand in the opposite direction of the Oasis Network into the Milky Way. In only a few short years, they were able to discover 4 stars with planets close enough to habitable that no terriformation was needed. They called them Cibus, Unda, Pondus, and Glacies. In an amazing stroke of luck, they stumbled across a second Obelisk on Unda. This one part of the set for sure, but slightly different than the first, and was brought to Glacies for study.
16 years after the first spy was caught in Outer Sol, an incident occurred indirectly linking the Inner System's F.O. to the spy network. After the Corexiad invasion ended, the Obelisk discovered on their ship was moved to an isolated research facility on the Kuiper Belt planet Eris. in 640 E.S., it was stolen. While it was never officially proven the F.O. was behind the theft, the thief was unmasked as a known F.O. war hero. The F.O. denied all claims, stating the soldier was a rogue agent, disavowing any connections.
This loose bit of evidence was the last straw though, as far as the Outer Sol Collective was concerned. It was ordered all ties severed. No more permits to Outer Sol, no more trade, no more anything. Unfortunately, this also meant it was far too dangerous to attempt to move the stolen Obelisk as patrols were up ten fold. It would sit hidden in the shadow of an unnamed Jovian object for nearly 18 years.
In those 18 years, the war for LarAng would end favorably. The Joint Outer Sol and Boreades forces would liberate the remaining enslaved MezeRen, eliminate the Corexiads from the TakRa System, and the O.S.C. would be giving a planet in thanks for all they had done to free them. The Oasis Network would be completed, including an additional path to a third galaxy, the Andromeda, and the home system of the Drexen, Otil.
18 years later, in the year 658 E.S. a small, independent transpiration captain and his first officer are hired to take command of the O.S.C.S Perpetro for a simple pick and drop job in the Shenubeki.
